Standard paper sizes compared with the Royal Mail 'Letter' and 'Large Letter' sizes.
Note that A4 is larger than 'Letter' size - but fold it in half and it becomes A5-sized, which is smaller than 'Letter'.
Doing this could save you the difference between the postage on 'Letters' and 'Large Letters': 32p for 1st Class (63p v 95p) or 20p for 2nd Class (54p v 74p).
Bear in mind that doing this doubles the thickness; so, if you are putting multiple sheets in the envelope, you should check using the thickness bars on the Home page.
